CIMA researchers Juan L. Garzon and Óscar Ferreira, in collaboration with researchers from LNEC just published an open-access article in Scientific Reports

Due to the lack of standarization and uniformity between previous works regarding the definition of critical situations and the associated wave overtopping limits, the present study aims at creating a conceptual impact level categorization that defines overtopping discharge thresholds and establishes warning levels for different types of exposed coastal elements. To reach this goal, this paper proposes a new and unified conceptual and quantitative categorization of warning levels for pedestrians and assets based on both coastal impact evidence collected during wave overtopping episodes with varying intensity and the capability of the existing assessment methods in predicting critical situations.
