I like to call myself an experimental phytoplankton ecologist; most of my work has been focused on phytoplankton ecology in coastal ecosystems, particularly the effects of anthropogenic stressors and climate change-related variables, and the use of phytoplankton as an ecological indicator in estuarine and coastal ecosystems. Presently, I am mostly dedicated to the study of harmful algal blooms and eutrophication in coastal ecosystems, not only the ecological part, but also the human dimensions.

Currently, I hold an assistant research scientist position at CIMA-UAlg. I have also been teaching Marine Microbiology, Microbial Ecology, and Advanced Methods in Biological Oceanography, to B.Sc. and M.Sc. students, and I am supervising several M.Sc. and Ph.D. students.

Ph.D. Psychology, UAlg (submitted)
Ph.D. Marine Sciences (specialization Marine Ecology), UAlg 2010
M.Sc. Clinical and Health Psychology, UAlg 2019
M.Sc. Ecology, Management and Modelling of Marine Resources, NOVA Lisbon 2007
B.Sc. (3 yrs) Psychology, UAlg 2017
