Rita B. Domingues, Ph.D. (b. 1979) graduated in Marine Biology and Fisheries (specialization in coastal management) in 2002 and in Psychology in 2017 at the University of Algarve. She obtained a M.Sc. in Ecology, Management & Modeling of Marine Resources at the New University of Lisbon in 2007 and completed her Ph.D. in Marine Sciences (specialization in marine ecology) at the University of Algarve in 2010. She is now finishing a M.Sc. in Clinical and Health Psychology and a (2nd!) Ph.D., also in Psychology.
I like to call myself an experimental phytoplankton ecologist; the majority of my work has been focused on phytoplankton ecology in coastal ecosystems, particularly the effects of anthropogenic stressors and climate change-related variables, and the use of phytoplankton as an ecological indicator in estuarine and coastal ecosystems.
However, eclectic and curious by nature, I recently finished a B.Sc. degree in Psychology, which allowed me to expand my research to the realm of environmental psychology. I am currently finishing a MSc degree in Clinical and Health Psychology, studying the relationships between eating disorderds and yoga practice, and I am also finishing a PhD in Psychology, studying place attachment and risk perception of coastal hazards.
In 2011 I received the Young Scientist Award 2010 by Fluviário de Mora and in 2017 the Best Congress Paper Award at the II International Congress on Interdisciplinarity in Social and Human Sciences.
As of early 2019, I have published 27 articles in international, peer-reviewed journals (22 as first author), and I have also contributed to over 40 conference presentations (9 as invited speaker). I also published a science divulgation book in 2006. I have been involved in undergraduate and graduate teaching and completed the supervision of several graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Algarve. I also coordinated a Leader+ project and have participated in several FCT research projects as team member and task leader. The last projects I worked on focused on coastal phytoplankton ecology and ecological effects of ocean acidification.
From 2011 to 2016 I was a postdoctoral fellow at the Universities of Algarve and Lisbon, working with Prof. Vanda Brotas and Prof. Ana Barbosa on the effects of climate change and eutrophication on phytoplankton dynamics in coastal ecosystems. From 2016 to 2018 I was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Algarve working on risk perception of coastal hazards, supervised by coastal processes expert Prof. Óscar Ferreira and psychologist Prof. Saul Neves de Jesus.
Currently, I hold an assistant research scientist position at CIMA-UAlg. I'm conducting a project on harmful algal blooms in the Ria Formosa funded by the Systematics Research Fund and supervising several undergraduate and graduate students. I've also been teaching General Ecology to undergraduate Marine Biology students.
