Ana B. Barbosa (BSc Marine Biology, PhD Marine Sciences, 2006) is a tenured Assistant Professor at University of Algarve (UAlg), lecturing courses related to Biological Oceanography and Marine Ecosystem Dynamics. She was a member of the Organizing Committee of the BSc and MSc Programmes in Marine Biology, and Director of this BSc, during the past 10 years. She has been developing research in Marine Microbial Ecology and Ecosystem Dynamics, and her major research interests include the regulation of planktonic communities and effects of natural and anthropogenic-induced ecosystem changes. She has supervised 2 PhD and 9 Master theses. She has been involved in 15 European and national funded research projects, being coordinator of several national projects. She has published 20 articles in peer-reviewed SCI-indexed journals, and 5 book chapters.

Cristina Veiga-Pires (PhD in Environmental Sciences) is an Assistant Professor lecturing in Marine Geology, Paleoceanography and Geostatistics. She has been the Vice-Dean of the Faculty in Sciences and Technology and President of the Pedagogic Council of the Faculty. She is currently the coordinator of the MSc in Geomatics. She has 16 years of research experience in paleoclimate, paleoenviroment and isotopic geochemistry. Flávio Martins

Flávio Martins (PhD, MSc, Eng.) develops research and consultant activities in hydrodynamics, water quality and ecology. The study domains range from coastal and estuarine to riverine, natural and artificial reservoirs. The focus of his research is on Mathematical Modelling and on information systems (Visualization, Databases, GIS, etc.). The main tool used is the MOHID modelling system, an integrated model developed by the MARETEC group with contribution from the University of Algarve. Main topics are: hydrodynamics of estuarine and coastal regions; sediment transport; water quality; ecology; river basin processes. He has more than 20n years of experience in research and consultant activities, 19 papers in peer review scientific journals and more than 40 articles in scientific conferences.

Karim Erzini

Karim Erzini (PhD, MSc) is an Associate Professor lecturing Population Dynamics, Stock Assessment, Fisheries Technology, Marine Population Biology, and Fisheries Ecology. He coordinates the Mundus Label International Masters in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation (EMBC+). With more than 25 years of fisheries experience, he has coordinated 9 international projects, 2 national projects, and participated in more than 20 others. He has published more than 130 papers in peer review, international journals, and 7 book chapters/books. He is on the editorial board of Fisheries Research since 1999, and the Editorial Advisory Board of Marine and Freshwater Living Resources since 2013. He has supervised 20 PhD students (16 completed).

He has 20 years of research experience on the study of water quality monitoring and modelling, and environmental risk assessment. Classes taught: Meteorology and Climatology, Geographic Information Systems and Prospection Techniques, coordinator of the Marine Sciences degree in 2008-2010, currently involved in the environmental engineering degree coordination, 14 years of research experience in the area of geophysical modeling of plate tectonic processes, particularly at the Portuguese oceanic margins, coordinator of the modeling task in 9 funded national projects since 2006 (PI of the project multi-scale modeling of deformation in the Gulf of Cadiz), author of 9 international papers.

Maria João Bebianno

Maria João Bebianno (PhD) is full professor at the University of Algarve with more than 30 years of experience in marine contamination and ecotoxicology. She has published >150 papers (h-31) and participated in several national and international research projects, supervised more than 19 PhDs students and several Pos-docs. She has participated in more than 80 PhD vivas in other Portuguese, EU countries (France, Ireland, Spain, and U.K.), Brasil and Australia Universities. She has developed collaborative research with teams from several universities and research centres of the EU (Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, UK, and Finland) and non-EU countries (Brazil Cape Verde and China). Her research work is being developed at the Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIMA) where she leads the Ecotoxicology and Environmental Chemistry Group. Her research focused on the effects of organic and inorganic “old” and emerging contaminants (pharmaceuticals and nanomaterials) on aquatic organisms. More recently the team enrolled in proteomic research applied to Ecotoxicology.

Sofia Gamito (PhD) is assistant professor lecturing in “Animal Ecology”, “Ecological Modelling”, “Habitat Management”, and “Benthic and Nektonic Processes”. She has been in the Coordination Commission of the Biology degree and of the Biology and Geology Master. Currently she is in the Marine Biology degree Coordination Commission. Her main research interests are in marine and coastal ecology, namely in biological processes, ecological modelling, trophic food webs, experimental ecology, and environmental assessment and management. She has more than 50 publications, 30 of them are published in peer-reviewed journals, and has participated in 15 national or international projects, related to ecology and management of coastal and estuarine areas.
