  • Coastal Ocean Dynamics: Influence of wind and topography on coastal circulation. Kelvin waves and coastal trapped waves. Dynamic variability in coastal areas. Coastal plumes, stratification and buoyancy. Internal waves and tides.
  • Estuaries and Lagoon Systems: Hydrodynamics of estuaries. Salt balance. Tides in estuaries. Mixing processes in rivers and estuaries. Residence times.
  • Coastal Marine and Estuarine Chemistry: Sources, reactions, transport and fate of chemical species. Conservative behaviour of dissolved compounds during estuarine mixing.

Remote sensing and marine cartography

  • Satellites, orbits, spatial and temporal resolution, sensor types, calibration and atmospheric correction.
  • Sea Surface Temperature. Ocean Colour (chlorophyll and suspended matter). Detection of thermal fronts.
  • Ocean surface topography (radar altimeter). Swath-bathymetry and side-scan sonar. Backscatter and interpretation of acoustic imaging.
  • Processing and cleaning data from swath-bathymetry. Construction of grids, mosaics and cartography. Methods of data presentation.

Scientific Diving

Topics:

  • Introduction to scientific diving.
  • Diving planning, team work, gear and objectives.
  • Underwater cartography. Introduction to underwater species and rocks. Surveying, sampling and data analysis.
  • Case study: Ria Formosa lagoon and adjacent coastal waters – scientific diving techniques applied to marine biology and geology.
  • Note: Snorkelling dives for students without diving certificate and scuba dives for students with at least 1st level (Open Water – OWSD) diving certificate.
