RN III: Multiscale geological processes across the ocean margins

RN III addresses the geological processes, at time scales ranging from seconds (or below) to millions of years, and at spatial scales ranging from grain sizes to ocean basins. It is structured around 3 key tasks:

  • Coastal and marine morphodynamics:

Sediment transport at inner shelf and coastal areas, including during energetic events (e.g., storm, overwash, flood) for morphodynamic characterisation and the development of early warning systems.

  • Impacts, records and models of sea level variations:

Estimate of past (Holocene) and future seal level variations in South Iberia based on the morphodynamic evolution of margins and transitional areas at the centennial to millennial time-scales.

  • Basin analysis

Study of large-scale geological processes related to the evolution of sedimentary basins and sub-basins using various approaches (e.g., palynology, thermal maturation, biomarkers), including the characterisation of hydrocarbon source rocks potential.
