    André Pacheco is a physical oceanographer and has a PhD in Physical Oceanography (UK) and a MSc / BSc degree on Environmental Engineering. He specialized on coastal processes and on the collection of field data (topography, bathymetric, currents/wave data), focusing on nearshore hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and bathymetric change on time scales of hours to years. He have worked on several projects related with coastal dynamics, both with National and European institutions, where was responsible on organizing and undergo high-frequency field surveys for the measurement of the current-wave interaction with the bed. His PhD research was devoted on studying the hydro/morphodynamic evolution of Ria Formosa (Algarve, Portugal), one of the two multi-inlet systems of European coasts.

    Today his focus is on marine renewable energies, particularly tidal energy extraction potential on confined channels and impact evaluation from exploration combining numerical modelling tools and field data. He aims to understand what are the best way to evaluate the power extraction potential from a local site; understand how to evaluate technology impact on flow field changes and how the environment influences the energy extraction efficiency; develop correct methodologies to evaluate the maximum limit for the extracted energy without significant environmental impacts; develop new technologies to extract energy based on floatable concepts, micro-generation principles and bio-engineering concepts.

    He is currently Principal Investigator of three projects related with tidal energy: (1) Exploring new concepts for extracting energy from tides (funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology FCT- IF2014); (2) SCORE - Sustainability of using Ria Formosa Currents On Renewable Energy production (funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology FCT - PTDC/AAG-TEC/1710/2014); and (3) WATTAGE - Workability Aspects of Tidal Turbine Arrays on producing Green Energy (funded by OCEAN-ERANET). These proposals assembled international researchers with a broad range of experience. The aim is on testing tidal energy converters and analyse energy extraction efficiency, environmental impacts from array devices, and interaction between the equipment-environment. AP five years goal is to set a research cluster about this topic in Portugal, evolving national and international top rated marine sciences institutions.

    Until now, AP and his co-authors published 24 papers in peer review journals, 14 with AP as first author. More than 25 abstract were published on conference proceedings and his papers were presented on the most rated international conferences on coastal processes. AP also accumulates the position of being CIMA - Centre for Marine and Environmental Research - Vice Diretor, at University of Algarve and H2020 Earth Observation evaluator at the European Comission.

  • Interests:

    Europe has the potential to tap into an exceptional renewable energy resource from as yet unexploited offshore wind, wave and tide resources. AP coordinates the MORE - Marine Offshore Renewable Energy team - a group of researchers from CIMA - Centre for Marine and Environmental Research. Our research focus is on support the optimization of different types of marine renewable technologies to produce energy from the ocean processes. We aim on creating new tools and methods to quantify the marine energy resources; and study the effects of exploitation of energy in marine ecosystems, using and testing full-scale prototypes and keeping a strong partnership with the industry.
