    Nélia C. Mestre is assistant researcher at the Centre for Marine and Environmental Research of the University of Algarve. She obtained her PhD in Ocean and Earth Science in 2009 from the University of Southampton, UK. She is developing work related to marine ecotoxicology, with special emphasis on the environmental threats to fauna by deep-sea mining, and other human activities in the deep sea, and on the environmental impact of emergent contaminants (microplastics, technology critical elements, nanoparticles, pharmaceuticals). She has also dedicated a good deal of her scientific research effort into the development of new protocols for toxicity testing, specifically to be applied to either “extreme” environments (e.g. deep-sea) or to contaminants with specific characteristics (e.g. microplastics). NMestre has published 25 publications in international peer-reviewed journals (over 623 citations, h-index 15 - scopus). She has further produced 3 book chapters and 20 scientific reports. She is leading the UALG team in the JPIOceans Mining Impact 2 project funded by FCT and DGPM and has participated in several research projects, of which 11 with international teams.
