MSc in Petrology/Geochemistry (University of Warsaw -UW, 1972), MSc in Quaternary Geology (University of Brussels -VUB, 1983), doctorate in geology (Free University of Brussels, 1987)and aggregation in Marine & Environmental Science (University of Algarve -UAlg, 2003). During his professional career he held the following positions: Geologist (1973/74) in Contitec S.A., Brazil, Researcher (1974/76) at the Institute of Building Materials in Warsaw, geologist /geochemist and director of the analytical laboratory(1977/81 ) in the Ministry of Natural Resources of Guinea Bissau, post doc researcher and associate professor (1987/1988)at the Free University of Brussels, Assistant Professor(1988/90) at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, Assistant, Associate and full professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology, UALG,(1990/2006). Scientific Coordinator of the Center for Marine and Environmental Research(1998 – 2016). He is president of the Portuguese Group for Quaternary Studies. At present his research is dedicated to the studies of climate and sea level change during the late Quaternary in the littoral zone of Iberian Peninsula and along the Brazilian shore line, to the geochemistry of sedimentary processes and to an integrated, science based territorial/coastal management. In the academic context coordinated 24 research projects, promoted 25 master's degrees, 7 doctorates and 5 postdocs.
